Making a Cricket Home

You can make a cricket home quite cheaply using a plastic container with a secure lid.

Things you need

A suitable sized plastic container with good ventilation - the size is dependent on the size and quantity of crickets you are using.

A cardboard tube sealed tightly one end - a wine cork and sticky tape works well
Sticky tape for covering any big gaps, covering the outside of the cardboard tube, this will prevent crickets from climbing so easily.

Newspaper - to cover the bottom of the tank.

2 x Small dishes

Cotton wall

Egg boxes or toilet tubes

Food - A mixture of fruit and vegetables (see http://www.beautifuldragons. 503xtreme. com/Nutrition.html ), tropical fish food and a tub of commercial cricket food supplement.

(1) Cut a hole in the top of the container large enough for the cardboard tube to fit through making sure it is a tight fit but easy to remove the tube. Sticky tape can be used to reduce the size of the gap.

(2) Cover the outside in the tube in sticky tape to prevent crickets escaping and secure the top end, with a cork and tape for example. Also make sure that there is an entrance into the tube so the crickets can climb up inside of it.

(3) Line the bottom of the plastic container with paper and arrange the toilet roll inners and egg boxes for hides.

(4) Place a layer of cotton wool in one of the dishes and soak with water, this will provide water to drink without the risks of crickets drowning. Place a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables in the other dish. Remember to clean and refill these dishes daily to ensure the best quality food for your Reptile.

(5) Sprinkle some tropical fish food and cricket supplement around the rest of the enclosure.

(6) Replace the lid and the cardboard tube.

(7) This is then ready for you to move the crickets into. After a while crickets will hide in the cardboard tube, thus to feed remove the cardboard tube from the top, covering the open end during transport, and shake into Reptile enclosure.
