Green Anole (Iguanidae; Anolis carolinensis)

Anoley is a Green Anole, often known as the American Chameleon due to their ability to change colour. Anoley was purchased in April 2006, from Swallows Reptiles in Colchester , when it was very young and just over 2.5” (7.5cm) in length. Whilst Anoles most commonly live in the rainforest they are increasingly adapting to live in more urban surroundings around the world, surviving on a variety of foods such as crickets, moths, flies and small worms. Anoley is very active and always on the move, however, in an instance it has the ability to completely disappear behind some leaves. Due to its origins

Anoley's enclosure is set up to simulate the rainforest, this is done through surroundings, humidity and temperature. The enclosure is an 18x15x15” (45x38x38 cm) glass tank, so there is no need to worry of anything rotting with the high humidity levels. It is decorated with a variety of real and artificial plants, bamboo canes and twigs. The high humidity level of 70% is maintained by misting the enclosure as required and the temperature of 90 ° F(32 ° C) is regulated by using a red heat bulb and a UVA/UVB light bulb to simulate 14 hours of daylight per day.

For more information regarding the rainforest enclosure see the Housing section of this website. Anoley is fed small crickets, locusts, mealworms and wax worms. The mealworms were bred at home in order to produce smaller, younger worms that would not prove so difficult to digest. For extra nutrition all food is dusted with a high calcium vitamin powder that is important in preventing reptiles contracting the potentially fatal condition Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD). Live food is also fed a specially formulated supplement to provide extra nutrition when eaten; more information can be found in the Feeding section.
